Touring Assemblies

Calpulli introduces audiences to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage through movement, colorful costuming and garments, lively rhythms, and engaging narration. Each 50-minute program is guided by a narrator, who introduces the historical and cultural context of the dances. Audiences also participate in interactive workshops exploring footwork, rhythms, and even the mariachi gritos. The themed performances or assemblies are designed for audiences of all ages, particularly students from Pre-K through university.

Themed Performances

¡Fiesta Mexicana!: The Famous Dances of Mexico

¡Fiesta Mexicana! is a vibrant celebration by Calpulli Mexican Dance Company featuring the most popular and traditional dances of Mexico. This exhilarating performance takes audiences all over Mexico– from the Gulf Coast of Veracruz with its lively footwork, to the rocky mountains of Chihuahua where polka is paramount, the lush forests of Michoacán and her beloved Viejitos, and spirited Jalisco, home of the famed Mariachi. Our fiesta, featuring dazzling garments and dance, explores connections and rhythms rooted in native American, African, European and Caribbean cultures. Audiences of all ages will be immersed in the richness of Mexican culture and leave with freshly sparked pride, joy and curiosity.  


Educators and School Leaders, this performance complements school curriculum with educational topics such as geography, music, dance, Spanish language, Hispanic Heritage, and indigenous traditions in order to foster cross-cultural appreciation.

Time of the Marigold: A Día de Muertos Celebration

Explore the colorful traditions of Día de Muertos with Calpulli Mexican Dance Company’s Time of the Marigold. Featuring vivacious theatrical dance, movement, and music, this compelling performance guides audiences from native mesoamerican roots to the vivid, contemporary expressions of today. Along the way, meet unforgettable characters–like the elegant Catrina– and discover the meaning behind the marigold flower, ofrendas or altars, and other timeless elements that connect the living with the departed. Audiences of all ages will be immersed in heartfelt traditions of Mexico, embracing joy, whimsy and family above all.

Native Mexico: Dances of the First People

Native Mexico is a unique interactive performance by Calpulli Mexican Dance Company honoring those that came before us. Join us as we pay tribute to the prehispanic civilizations who continue to inspire us today: the Mexika (MEH-shee-ka), Purepecha (poo-REH-peh-cha), Zapotec (zap-uh-tek), and Totonaca (toh-toh-NAH-kah) and those that came before them, the Maya (mai-uh), Olmec (OL-mek), and Tolteca (tohl-TEH-kah) peoples. Featuring vibrant dance, eye-catching garments and melodious instruments originated by prehispanic civilizations, audiences will experience beautiful rituals to honor the earth, the spirit and the community. Bridging the past and present, this performance serves as a reminder of traditions that remain gloriously alive within movement and rhythm.

¡Viva Puebla!: Fiesta de Cinco de Mayo

Discover the deeper meaning behind the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo, and the inspiring story of a people’s resilience, courage and pride, with Calpulli Mexican Dance Company’s ¡Viva Puebla! Often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, Calpulli commemorates the Battle of Puebla, when on May 5th (cinco de mayo) in 1862, against all odds, a small Mexican force triumphed over the world’s most powerful army. Join us as we honor the spirit of Puebla through lively movement, music and radiant garments. Audiences of all ages will be immersed in the traditions of Puebla, both past and present, and pay homage to the bravery of its people which forever changed the course of history in the Americas.
