On Friday, August 24, Calpulli Mexican Dance Company will lead a full moon celebration with percussive rhythms and drumming styles of Mexican music. The workshop will be led by Music Director George Saenz, who will demonstrate a variety Mexican drumming styles such as huapango, son de tarima, and polka using huehuetl drums, ayoyote shakers, bombo, redoblante and pandero. The workshop aims to show cultural connections through music and will relate the sounds and instruments of Mexican drumming to the cultures of South America, Africa, and Europe.

Founded in New York City in 2003, Calpulli Mexican Dance Company celebrates the diverse Mexican/Mexican American culture and history through music and dance. The organization produces professional performances and designs low-cost, high quality arts-in-education programming, including the Calpulli Community Program. Calpulli has received the “Don Quixote Award” from Brooklyn College and the “Borimex Award” from Teatro SEA for their commitment and services to the Latino and Mexican community.
